Music, I love you.

I have recently been introduced to the term “self-care” and let me tell you, it is definitely something I needed in my life. Doing everything on my day to day to-do list can be stressful at times, as I imagine it can be for others. Sometimes the hardest thing for me to do is take a step back, read a good book, do some yoga and just unwind. I am convinced that there is something in my DNA that prevents me from saying “no”- whether its work related or family related I feel inclined to help.

One thing I’ve learned in my journey to self-care is that it is OK to say no sometimes. I have to take care of myself to be a better resource and complete my tasks well. Having little time and what seems like a million things to do, I have found that any time I have to unwind is well spent with a little set of tunes.

Music has always been an important part of my life. No I’m not an amazing singer or anything (unless I’m singing my heart out in my car or the shower) but I love the meaning that music brings. Anything and everything I feel can be transmitted through a song. Certain songs remind me of specific people, events, and even lessons and I find that amazing.

When I feel like I am overwhelmed, without fail listening to my favorite jams is a quick way to clear my head, take some “me” time and go on with my day. Just like memories, music can take me back to my life lessons whether they were about dealing with heartbreak, depression, angst, genuine happiness, and of course love-especially love. And then there are songs that give me hope and the sense that everything will be right with the world eventually; Songs that have me feeling like I can take over the world because, well, I am me.

Something I live by (or at least I am beginning to) is the idea that you should “Dress for the job you want and not for the job you have”; It’s like making a statement to the universe. This is also true with life. You may not always be in control of what’s in store, but you can be prepared. To me, being comfortable and presentable is important because you never know who you’re going to meet! 

It’s important for me to feel and look confident. As a young adult, makeup tends to be part of my daily routine and whether I’m going to a job interview or social outing, I like to look my best. What I love about makeup is that you can keep it simple and enhance your natural beauty (because we’re all beautiful y’all!), it can give you that extra boost of confidence to carry on with your day and it can even transform your look for any occasion. 

I must admit that wearing makeup instantly makes me feel brighter. One thing I can’t live without is mascara. I feel like I look more fresh and bright, even on my off days. As women we tend to fulfill many different roles. I, for instance, am a daughter, sister, college graduate, friend, life explorer, and young professional. Once I complete my educational cycle and obtain a career, I want to set a precedent for women to reassert that with hard work come great rewards. I want to present myself as a woman “con la frente en alto” (with my head held high). I also want to know as much as I can about the world and explore it! While I am on my way to make my dreams come true, I’m going to make sure to send out positive vibes to the universe; I know that if I put my best foot forward nothing can stop me, so why not look great doing it?
